The tax return season has begun.

Many salaried workers may not think it is necessary, but those who paid a lot of medical expenses in 2024 may be able to get a tax refund in some cases.

For those who are eligible for medical expense deductions

■What is a medical expense deduction?

If you paid medical expenses during 2024 for yourself or your spouse or other relatives who live with you, you can deduct the amount calculated as follows from your income as a medical expense deduction.

(Total medical expenses paid during 2024 - amount reimbursed by insurance, etc.) - {100,000 yen (5% of total income for those with a total income of up to 2 million yen)} = medical expense deduction amount (maximum 2 million yen)

To receive a medical expense deduction, you must attach a "medical expense deduction statement" to your income tax return.

You must keep medical expense receipts at home for five years.
